More people are using digital planners, but for students, we give the edge to the paper planner. It’s easier to see, at a glance, everything that needs to be done that day, week, and month. And it’s simple to keep track of. All you have to do is stow it in your backpack and leave it there. It doesn’t need to be charged every night. It doesn’t require 4G or WiFi.

Once you are given an assignment or test date, note the date or deadline in your planner. Work backwards and figure out how much time you will need to work on the assignment or study for the test. Plot mini-deadlines for yourself in your planner so you know what you need to do each day to prepare. If you have a test on Friday, and today is Monday, use your planner to plot each night’s study goals to prepare for the test.

Use color in your planner to readily see what needs to be done. Use a different color for every subject, or one color for school and another for extracurriculars. Use a bright color to highlight important deadlines and test dates.

Your planner is a great visual tool for you to see what needs to be done and to strategize how you will get it all done. Your planner won’t look like your friends’ planners; a planner should be adapted to each individual user. How you make your planner work is up to you. Just make it work — and use it!
