The old bleachers in the school gym date back to the 1960s and are not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to the district’s athletic director, Tom Baker.
Baker said the new “state of the art” bleachers will be partly funded by a grant.
The grant was awarded to the district after Baker reached out to Republican state Sen. Terrence Murphy, who represents the 40th District covering parts of Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties.
The grant “presented a good opportunity for the district to fix something in need of repair at a very good price,” Baker said.
Demolition of the old bleachers will begin Saturday, Dec. 19 and likely run through Tuesday, Dec. 22. Assembly of the new ones will begin immediately afterwards, Baker said.
“The goal is to have the new bleachers finished by the time our students return from the holiday break,” he said, adding that he does not expect the project to impact any team schedules.
The new bleachers will be blue and white -- the school colors -- and have the “Sailors” logo printed across their rows.
There will be a special area designated as “veterans seating,” Baker said.
"I am proud to have partnered with the Hendrick Hudson School District to provide a grant for this great project," Murphy said, applauding it for providing a special section for veterans.
