Inaugural Hen Hud Race Raises Funds for District

MONTROSE, N.Y. – The Hendrick Hudson Community Educational Foundation held its first Healthy on the Hudson 5k Race and Walk on Saturday, with all proceeds benefiting district programs.

The nippy morning temperatures didn't prevent about 150 adults and students from lacing up their sneakers and lending their support for a good cause at Hendrick Hudson High School.

"I think it's a wonderful event. A lot of people have put a lot of effort into this to make it a success," said Dr. Frank Dorsa, a cardiologist who has a son and a daughter in the high school. "I hope it makes a lot of money for the schools and helps foster a sense of community."

Jeanine MacFadyen, one of the organizers for the foundation, said the idea for the fun-filled day, which also included an indoor Health Expo, fitness classes, a tennis round robin and healthy-cooking demonstrations, came from a similar event in Ossining.

"We had no idea how it would play out, but it's a beautiful day," said MacFadyen, who has three children attending schools in the Hendrick Hudson Central School District. "We really liked the idea of families coming out together, exercising and promoting health."

The race and walk started at the high school and went down Trolley Road to Kings Ferry Road to Verplanck, then back to the high school. The top finishers received gift certificates from Dick's Sporting Goods.
