Yorktown students Maria Mavrommatis and Colson Campbell spent nearly seven months working on their project for the fair. They said they definitely felt the pressure as they got closer to presenting their research.
“It'll be fine once everything starts flowing,” Mavrommatis said of her nerves.
More than 340 students from Westchester and Putnam counties participated in the annual science fair at Sleepy Hollow High School. Most of the high school students are seniors who have been researching in their fields for several years, although a few sophomores and juniors were in attendance, said Angelo Piccirillo, the fair's vice president.
The fair is a regional competition for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. A total of 13 finalists are selected Saturday to compete in the international fair in Phoenix this May, with several million dollars worth of prizes available.
“This is basically a gateway to that fair, plus the fact that these kids get to shine, to show what they've been working on,” Piccirillo said.
Mavrommatis and Colson's project studied the role of sleep and stress in a subject's socioeconomic status. The pair have been interested in stroke and aneurysm research since their freshmen year and teamed up with a professional at Mount Sinai Hospital.
“She basically just gave us all of the resources to make this work,” Mavrommatis said.
