Hendrick Hudson Students Create Relay For Life Video

MONTROSE, N.Y. -- Students at Henrick Hudson High School are asking residents and fellow students what will they relay for during a video they created for the upcoming Relay for Life event at the school.

Hendrick Hudson LEO's and American Cancer Society are presently organizing the schools first Relay for Life scheduled for June 3-4 at the school. They are working to get volunteers and support from the community to make this event a great success.

Five Hendrick Hudson High School students, along with teacher Paul LaVallee traveled to Columbia University last month to create the video. The five students were videotaped writing down important people or momentous events that they are planning to relay for on a “light board,” to stunning effect.

“When the students first came up with their idea for the video, I researched the technology and learned that Columbia University had its own ‘lightboard studio,’” said LaVallee. “Our contact at the American Cancer Society reached out to Columbia, and we were rewarded with an enthusiastic invitation to bring the students down and shoot the video in the special facility.”

The Relay for Life, scheduled for June 3-4 is a first for the district, and school organizers are working hard to drum up support both within the school and in the surrounding community.

Relay for Life is an overnight community event, during which participating teams will camp out and walk the high school track from 7:00 p.m. on Saturday evening through 7 a.m. on Sunday morning to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

It is a community-based, family- friendly event, with food, games and activities going on throughout the night. Fundraising is accomplished via individual and team contributions, as well as proceeds from the event’s many activities.

“It’s so important to give back,” said Gracie Aronson, one of the event’s student coordinators. “Cancer is an issue that affects everybody in some way.”

Organizers expect the event to be very moving, with both serious and joyful moments. There will be a survivors lap and remembrances, but also plenty of fun activities and uplifting community spirit. Anyone interested in getting involved click here
