Chromebooks are low-cost, web-enabled devices, similar to laptops, which are tightly integrated with the Google Apps suite.
The Chromebooks were purchased as part of the Hendrick Hudson 2013 Capital Project. Under the pilot program, 13 teachers have each received a cart of 30 devices for use this school year.These teachers, our Instructional Technology Coaches, will be developing the curriculum that will be used to teach other teachers this summer and next fall.
“This is the logical next step for the district in terms of our efforts to provide relevant and engaging learning environments” said Mathew Swerdloff, the district’s director of instructional technology. “We have been working hard for the last few years to prepare our staff and our infrastructure for mobile learning, and I believe that the timing for this pilot is just right. By the fall I expect there will be widespread use of the Google Apps suite and these Chromebooks throughout the district, thus providing a rich and varied learning environment for our students.”
All teachers will be able to participate in professional learning opportunities this summer, and will have access to the carts beginning in September.
Each school is receiving devices proportional to student population, with a ratio of about one device for every four students. Wireless is now available in all Hendrick Hudson schools as a result of the Capital Project.
