Hendrick Hudson High School Honors Graduates

CORTLANDT-- The entire senior class of Hendrick Hudson High School was invited to their annual awards ceremony  Monday June 20, to give out multiple scholarships and honor the accomplishments of its students. The first awards of the night were given to Jeff White, class valedictorian, and Tara Kutzbach, salutatorian, both of which brought their families to stand by their side.

“What’s nice,” said Food Service Director Clare Carey, “is one more time for not just the kids, but also their parents, to get together.” Carey gives out the Stephen Keenan Scholarship each year, in honor of her brother, both of whom were alumni. This year’s honoree, Joseph Capasso, got a standing ovation from the crowd when he was given the award. Carey selected him, she said, because he has handled his obstacles with such “grace and humor.”

Principal Jim Machan, Assistant Principal Dan Callahan and Assistant Principal Anecia Bell-Jefferson stood at the front of the crowd to hand out the many awards.

Here is a complete list of honorees from last nights dinner, provided by Hendrick Hudson High School:

YARA LOUISE HESTON MEMORIAL SERVICE AWARD

Someone once said that the gifts we give ourselves stay with us and die with us; but, the gifts we give to others go out into the world and are immortal.  Yara Louise Heston believed this and so, accordingly, lived her life.  Yara spent four of the happiest years of her life at Hen Hud, graduating in 1988 at which time she received the Morton C. Lindsey Award.  When she passed away in 2005, her family established this award as a tribute to her belief that others must come first in one's heart.  Yara never sought personal glory but rather lived with great humility and compassion.

This award is given to the student who exhibits the characteristics of Yara Louise Heston, Class of 1988.  The characteristics include devotion, loyalty, dependability, having a courteous demeanor, kindness to others and the ability to place the needs of others ahead of one’s own self.

This award is therefore a "living" tribute to Yara, to Hen Hud, and to this year's recipient:
