A sixth-grade student, Mahopac resident Clayton Collum, is joined with seventh-grade partner Wendy Lichtenberg. The school notes that the students finished eighth out of 40 teams in the VEX IQ Challenge on Saturday. The challenge is a state qualifier and was held at East Rockaway High School on Long Island.

"Competing in the second match of the finals, Clayton’s team, called the RoboCavs, scored 36 crucial bonus points when they successfully balanced their robot on the bridge with just seconds to go," the school noted in a statement. "The teammates then waited anxiously on the sidelines for three matches to see if the other finalists would outscore them."

The school continued, "When a team in a subsequent round scored 46 points, Clayton and Wendy found themselves in second place. They held on to the runner-up spot when the remaining teams could not keep their robots from falling off the bridge."

The advancement is significant, according to the school, as it is the first year in which the middle school team competed.

The state final, the schools, is set for March 4 and will take place in Massapequa, which is also on Long Island.
