SHRUB OAK, N.Y. – Three incumbent trustees on the Lakeland Board of Education will be trying to fend off a challenge from an assistant school superintendent in a district-wide election next month.

Board Vice President Carol Ann Dobson and Trustees James Carroll Jr. and Brian Hugick, all of whom reside in Cortlandt, submitted petitions for reelection, while Mohegan Lake resident Robert Rodriguez, assistant superintendent of schools in the East Ramapo School District, who unsuccessfully ran for the board three years ago, also met the April 16 deadline.

Rodriguez acknowledged the three incumbents will likely run as a team for the three available three-year term seats, but he feels his educational experience would be an asset to the board.

"It's a longshot, but you never know," Rodriguez said. "It's the same board that's been there for many years. Why I'm running is to help the board and the superintendent with everything that is new—the tax levy cap, ongoing negotiations with bargaining units – really for the interest of kids."

Rodriguez' name will be listed first on the ballot when voters go to the polls on May 15, when the fate of the proposed 2012-13 school budget will also be decided.

Dobson has been active in the school community for many years in many capacities. She serves on the board of education's Management Policy, District Parents' Council and Nutrition committees.

Carroll, who works in pigment research at BASF Corporation, serves on the Management Policy, Sick Bank and Safety committees.

Hugick, a high school science teacher, is a member of the Capital Projects and Audit committees.
