First Day Of School In Croton Brings Changes

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Students will flow into Croton-Harmon schools Tuesday for the first day of school after summer's last long weekend.

Since students left school for summer vacation, the start time at Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School has changed, the bus circle at the school didn't get its planned facelift, and the district's new Annual Professional Performance Review is waiting on state approval. Here are the changes in the district.

  • Students and staff are scheduled to arrive at Carrie E. Tompkins at 8 a.m.; dismissal begins at 2:25 p.m., buses depart at 2:35 p.m., a 10-minute shift.
  • Construction planned at the school's bus circle was put on hold, after the New York State Education Department failed to approve the district's construction plan in time for construction to start.
  • Three vehicles in the Croton-Harmon School District's fleet of buses were replaced during the summer. Together, the fleet drove 461,000 miles in the 2011-2012 school year.
  • The district's Annual Professional Performance Review model to evaluate teacher performance was sent to the state in July, and is being reviewed by the education department, according to Superintendent Edward Fuhrman.
  • The district faces its second year of budgeting under the state's 2 percent tax levy cap.
  • New assistant principal, Kerri Bianchi, joins the Carrie E. Tompkins administration team.
  • The district will use its new science labs for the first full year.
  • District social worker, Renee Tanner, will present "Safety and Stranger Awareness" to kindergarten through fourth-grade classes, following an incident involving a stranger in the elementary school building in May.
