YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Students at the BOCES Fox Meadow Middle/High School complex in Yorktown Heights are learning about cooking and business in a Home Economics/Culinary class this fall.
“It’s all about taking ownership,” said instructor "Cheffy" Stanley Rupinski. “And they are doing that!”
Rupinski is a veteran chef and Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Culinary teacher.
In addition to eating the dishes at school, students got to make all the dishes themselves. After passing an examination on food service and safety, the students received ServSafe certification from the National Restaurant Association.
For the recent Red Ribbon Week, Rupinski and his students drew patterns within cupcake batter using a chocolate-filled piping bag and a toothpick. They baked 160 cupcakes for the school's Red Ribbon Week assembly.
Rupinski had students come up with a rap song to help remember the necessary math for pints, quarts and cups.
"This class is really fun," said Joshua Vargas from Yonkers. "I’d like to be a chef in a five-star restaurant some day.”
