MONTROSE, N.Y. A Croton veterinarian was chosen Wednesday night to fill a vacancy on the the Hendrick Hudson Board of Education.
Dr. Carol Popolow-Abraham will be sworn in at a future meeting. She will replace former board member William Oricchio, who resigned earlier this month after serving for six years.
"I was very happy to be appointed, and happy that they chose me," said Popolow-Abraham, who was chosen over three other candidates. "I hope to involve the community a little bit more in the decision-making process. It's a great community resource," she said. Popolow-Abraham has two children at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary.
Popolow-Abraham has practiced veterinary medicine since 1989, and currently practices at the Croton Animal Hospital on Riverside Avenue. She began attending school board meetings about five years ago, she said, to obtain more information about the decision-making process.
School board terms are for three years. Popolow-Abraham said that, after the term of her appointment is over, she will likely seek election by public vote. The seat will be on the ballot in the next election cycle.
During the board's reorganization meeting, interim superintendent Brian Monahan was sworn in. Monahan will temporarily fill the position left open by the early retirement of Daniel McCann. Monahan has been hired at a rate of $875 per day.
Monahan said he is "looking forward to working with the Board of Education over the next 12 months as we continue to move the district forward in a positive direction."
Mary-Part Briggi was sworn in as school board president for the 2012-2013 school year, and Laurie Ryan was sworn in as vice president. The positions were formerly filled by Marion Walsh and Oricchio, respectively. Walsh will continue to serve as a school board member.
