Croton Students Making Colonial-Era Pillows For History Lesson

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Croton-Harmon fourth graders are delving into the country's Colonial period by making pillows the old fashioned way.

Croton-Harmon fourth-graders sewed Colonial-style four square pillows as an introduction to a unit about early American history.

“We are creating traditional four-square pillows to jumpstart into the Colonial curriculum,” said Eileen Stark, a fourth grade teacher at Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School. “We have our full-day Colonial Fair coming up and hopefully these pillows will be on display.”

With the help of teachers and parent volunteers, the Croton-Harmon students carefully pinned their fabric together, cut it and threaded needles to form their pillows.

“It’s extra hard because we are using four pieces instead of two,” said Hanna, one of the students. “It’s interesting to learn how people did things differently than we do.”
