CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Croton-Harmon School District students are "Kids Helping Kids" in an initiative to collect supplies for families in need after Hurricane Sandy.
"Everything we're collecting will make it into hands of people in Westchester," said Maria Slippen, co-president of the PTA at Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School. "It gave the kids an opportunity to be selfless."
The drive runs through Friday, Nov. 16. Each grade level is collecting specific items for families in need. Toiletries, baby needs, new clothing, gloves, pajamas and blankets are some of the items being collected.
Collection boxes have been set up in the Tompkins School main lobby, and the contents will be distributed to families as needed in the community. The drive began on Nov. 6.
Slippen said she couldn't speak for all students, but her two daughters became "very aware that there were people in need," she said.
"It's just so great to see these little kids see a need and want to help," Slippen said.
