Croton-On-Hudson Schools Closed Thursday, Maybe Friday

Correction: This story has been updated. A previous version of the story incorrectly stated the expected school closures.

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – There will be no classes for Croton-Harmon schools on Thursday,  Nov. 1.

There will be no school on Friday, either, unless power is restored to two of Croton-Harmon's school buildings and roads are cleared for school buses.

“We couldn't get through on a number of roads that are essential for a number of bus routes. I’m more optimistic we’ll have power before the roads are clear,”  said Superintendent Edward Fuhrman.

Power was restored to Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School Wednesday, but Croton-Harmon High School and Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School are without power. Fuhrman said he would not open school without power.

“I’m a little bit optimistic about the power, but I don’t know how optimistic I am about getting the trees off the major arteries,” Fuhrman said about opening school Friday.

Croton Mayor Leo Wiegman said Wednesday there is no estimate when power will be restored to the village of Croton. At this time, the village is working it’s way through 15 public safety hazards, including unblocking dead end streets where residents are trapped, making sure power lines on roadways are not energized, and removing trees from roadways.

Weigman said the village removed a 60-foot tree from Maple Street at Olcott Avenue, one of the villages major thoroughfares, on Wednesday.

Schools have an allotment of snow days that they can use to call off school and still fulfill the numbered of days mandated per year. Fuhrman said if schools have to remain closed because of Hurricane Sandy, Croton-Harmon may have to rearrange the calendar.

“Right now, we don’t have to make anything up, but anything longer, everyone’s going to be in that boat.”
