CROTON, N.Y. – Teachers serving the Croton-Harmon School District are devising new ways to incorporate interactive digital technology into the classroom.

“Our students need to be totally comfortable with computers,” said Deborah August, the district’s technology coordinator. "Computers are here to stay.”

During a technology expo for district faculty at Croton-Harmon High School, teacher Ashley Valentine led her “Cell Phones in the Classroom” workshop. It showcased applications that allow students to answer questions remotely using their phones, with answers appearing at a central location such as a SMART Board, which is an interactive chalkboard.

“You can hear from every kid,” Velentine said. “Even kids who don’t typically want to speak up.”

Teacher Kira Herbert hopes to use the features of Google Earth to teach students about geology.

“When students are studying the Hudson River, they learn it’s brackish,” said Herbert. “They can use Google Maps to travel north and see a dam.”

Teacher Sam Occhipinti said the application even can be useful in his social studies class.

“Being a social studies teacher, when the students are learning about Greece, I can show them the terrain using Google Maps,” Occhipinti said.

Judith Dayton also expressed interest in Google Classroom.

“It allows me to use less paperwork, and I can get real-time feedback from students,” Dayton said.
