The students, all whom have taken a minimum of a year of Mandarin Chinese classes, visited Beijing and Shanghai.
“The group toured cultural and historic sites, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square in Beijing, as well as Yu Yuan Gardens, the Bund and historic parts of Shanghai,” Mark Maxam, assistant principal at Croton-Harmon High, said in a press release.
Students stayed with host families in Shanghai. Throughout their visit, they attended classes with partner schools in both cities. They met local students and watched classes taught in Chinese.
“I like learning Chinese because it is unusual,” Forest Balemian-Spencer, a junior at Croton-Harmon High, said in a press release.
Henry Jaensch, also a Croton-Harmon junior, said in a press release exploring China’s history and culture in person was an unforgettable opportunity.
“Every place we went to had a distinct style and historical relevance,” Jaensch said. “The architecture referenced all the different time periods.”
All 15 students who went to China expressed further gratitude for their sometimes-challenging studies of Mandarin, and appreciated the opportunities to speak, listen, read and write in the language, according to the press release.
“Mandarin is becoming such a global language,” Nicki Lam, a Croton-Harmon High junior, said in a press release. “It’s really good to know.”
