Stern, 43, has lived in the district for 10 years and has two children, ages 8 and 4, attending the Croton-Harmon schools.

He is a graduate of The University of Maryland and Brooklyn Law School.

Stern is an attorney in private practice; and was formerly an administrative law judge with the Department of Finance; an impartial hearing officer for the New York City Department of Education; and a New York City public school teacher in South Ozone Park, Queens.

Why did you choose to run for the board of education this year?

To ensure that the decisions made by the Board of Education represent the voices, concerns and philosophies of the Croton-Harmon community and not just the opinions and feelings of the seven individuals sitting in those seats.

What issues in particular would you like see addressed?

Restoration of the modified (middle school) sports programs that were cut; increased accountability from teachers to parents; reduction of non-essential expenditures; reduction of a bloated administrative budget and administrative salaries; increasing community involvement; spearheading fundraising efforts through PTA liaisons; and opening doors to sponsors to alleviate the burden on our taxpayers.
