Students will be performing "Broadway Kids" at 7 p.m. The students have preparing in arts and music classes to put on a Broadway-style musical revue. The students will be performing two songs each from five different musicals: "Cinderella," "Beauty and the Beast," "Peter Pan," "The Jungle Book," and "Rocky."
The kids have created their own playbill covers and sets in art class and have also designed their own costumes. The music is performed by a professional band.
"The kids get to take full ownership of it," music teacher Marlena Peters said. "They learn the process of putting together a show. It's crazy, but it's so much fun."
"Broadway Kids" has been a tradition at the school for many years and Peters has worked on it the last six years.
"The kids learn a lot about teamwork and collaborating with each other," Peters said.
Peters said it can be remarkable to watch kids who are shy suddenly come alive on stage.
"We work on their stage presence so they feel comfortable," Peters said. "They suddenly aren't as nervous and begin to get very enthusiastic. Everyone is going to have to speak in public at least once. This allows them to get over their nerves and perform."
Students are very excited to perform songs from "Rocky," Peters said.
"They are having so much fun with it," Peters said. "They are really into it."
Grace Mahoney, who plays a panther in "The Jungle Book," said she has really enjoyed rehearsing.
"It feels like you're on Broadway," Mahoney said. "It's really cool getting to dance and sing."
Dylan Thomas, who plays a bear in "The Jungle Book," said he enjoys getting to play such a big character.
"When I watched 'The Jungle Book', the bear was always my favorite character," Thomas said.
Mahoney and Thomas said their favorite songs from "The Jungle Book" are "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You."
