CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Carrie E. Tompkins fourth graders got into character for the annual Colonial Day, donning clothing and headwear true to the American Colonists while rotating through different activities on Friday, Jan. 23.

With help from parent volunteers, students grabbed a hammer and nail in the tinsmithing workshop, were scolded for spelling bee errors in Dame School and played and made their own Colonial games.

Each student chose a first and last name at random to wear as his or her Colonial name for the day, such as Richard Fitchett, Rose Winslow or Caleb Merriman.

“My favorite activity was Dame School; it was really fun,” said Kevin Lopez.

Classmate Dylan Thomas said a big lesson from the day was “learning that Colonists made everything that they used.”

Dahlia Greece said the game room was especially memorable. “I liked jump rope and playing with the marbles,” she said.

Colonial Day ended with a big feast for lunch with goodies like turkey and ham, apple cider and an array of desserts.
