Blue Mountain Students Move Up To High School

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – More than 200 students bid a fond farewell to Blue Mountain Middle School Tuesday in a moving up ceremony that was as much about looking toward the next four years as it was remembering the previous four.

Principal John Owens told students that they had a lot to look forward to at Hendrick Hudson High School.

"You've worked hard in the middle school and that hard work will pay off in the high school," Owens said. "In fact, for many of you, high school will actually be a lot easier in many ways. You're not going to grow as much as you did while you were in middle school, you're not going to have the social and emotional growth that took place here as well as the physical, and if you have good academic habits you'll be in good shape."

Superintendent Daniel McCann, who will be retiring at the end of this school year, also told students that the district continues to improve and that the high school was full of great opportunities for students of all kinds to shine. He urged students to follow their passions in life and not be afraid to take a path less travelled.

"I have a son who is a scientist and a daughter who is an artist and I let them choose what they wanted to do," McCann said. "They both work extraordinarily hard and are successful because they love what they do, they chose what they wanted to do and they believe what they do. It can be comfortable to be like your friends as you move ahead but it can also be comfortable to be different as well."
