A new scam involving postings of used cars purportedly for sale has been making the rounds in Western Massachusetts, specifically in Springfield, the police department announced.

An alert was issued by the Springfield Police Department regarding a scam involving the fraudulent posting of used cars on Facebook with individuals falsely claiming they represent eBay Motors.

Once contacted by fraudsters, victims are then instructed to pay for the vehicles through gift cards, which police said: “was a red flag.”

Investigators said that the ads on Facebook look similar to the ones pictured above, but the car is listed in Springfield with an address attached for a used car dealership or auto shop.

“Please verify the address on google maps before inquiring about these vehicles,” the department says. “Also look at the photos as well as the same photos are being used in different states.”

Anyone who believes they have been victimized by this or a similar scam has been asked to contact the Springfield Police Department’s Detective Bureau by calling (413) 787-6335.
