The update includes the next steps for additional monitoring and data collection for further evaluation and review by regulatory agencies.
The highlights of the update include the following:
- The site continues to be safe, and parking areas and athletic fields are available for use. Some fenced areas remain.
- Routine monitoring of the site continues.
- Greenwich continues to work with state and federal agencies to obtain approval for the remaining elements of the remedial plan.
The environmental remediation cleanup program was set in motion when toxic chemicals were discovered in the soil during excavation work on a Greenwich High School building project in 2011, according to a release from Greenwich Public Schools.
As a result, the Town of Greenwich, along with the Greenwich Public Schools Board of Education, submitted the Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the Greenwich High School site to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection in November 2013, the release said.
The agencies provided their approval to begin some of the remediation work, which was done in the summer of 2014.
The following work was done:
- Removing impacted soil on the south side of the GHS grounds, and testing of remaining soil to ensure impacted soil has been removed. This area was then restored, which included planting islands in the southern parking lot, as well as planting trees and shrubs throughout the southern portion of the site.
- Expanding the west parking lot on the GHS grounds and relocating and grading the stockpiled soil that had been placed between the existing parking limits and athletic fields #3 and #4.
- Site utilities, such as stormwater collection and detention structures and parking lot lighting, were also installed.
Additional remediation work was done in 2015 and this year.
