CLIFFVIEW PILOT EXCLUSIVE: Store-bought materials similar to those used in both the firebombing of a Rutherford rabbi’s home and an attempted arson at a Paramus synagogue were found outside another temple in Bergen County this week, raising the possibility that at least one other attack was planned, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned. The sweeps are intended as a way of “putting everybody at ease” now that authorities have charged Anthony M. Graziano with the crimes, a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the operation told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Graziano continues to be held on $5 million bail at the Bergen County Jail following a brief court appearance in Hackensack today.

Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli this afternoon said the sweeps would include all synagogues within 10 miles of Graziano’s home with K9 units, specifically looking for “accelerants and flammables.”

The radius was chosen because Graziano doesn’t have a car. Authorities said he made several trips to and from various targets on his bicycle.

Bergen County Police Lt. James Giblin, who is heading the operation, called on the sheriffs in Essex and Morris, as well as the state Fire Marshal, through the NJSP “Detect and Render Safe Task Force,” to boost the number of patrols.

The team headed by Giblin began its sweep this afternoon and was done with the first wave before 8 p.m.

The lieutenant said nearly half of 70 sites on the list were checked out, without anything turning up, on Wednesday.

The sweeps were to resume in the morning and are expected to be completed well before the original 4 p.m. Friday deadline.

Molinelli said he went public with the information so that if people see the dogs and uniformed officers around, they’ll “be aware of [the] purpose and objective.”
