The letters were received at government and private offices in North Jersey over a period of about a week and a half. Each time, they were in an envelope inside another.
No one was injured and initial tests showed nothing hazardous. Yet offices had be shut down in Clifton, Fair Lawn, Ringwood, Totowa, Woodland Park (formerly West Paterson) and Wayne while authorities investigated.
Although authorities wouldn’t say where the letters were sent, Fair Lawn Police Chief Erik Rose confirmed that he received one. Another reportedly went to the law office of Vivino & Vivino in Wayne.
White powder mailings aren’t that unusual for federal authorities since anthrax-laced envelopes killed five people nationwide. Last December, suspicious white powder mailed to the offices of nearly 20 state governors was deemed harmless.
