Trump Official With Hudson Valley Ties Denies Tweet Was Anti-Semitic

Dan Scavino, a Hopewell Junction resident who graduated from Yorktown High School and serves as social media director for the Donald Trump presidential campaign, is firing back at claims that a Trump tweet about Chappaqua's Hillary Clinton that appeared to feature a Star of David image was anti-Semitic.

The tweet featured an image of Chappaqua resident Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, with the words Most Corrupt Candidate Ever written in what looked like a Star of David. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, deleted the tweet, replacing it with one with the words inside a circle. The Trump campaign has been accused of lifting the photo from a white supremacist twitter account.

Scavino, in a statement, said the social media graphic was not created by the campaign nor was it sourced from an antisemitic site. He said it was not a Star of David, but a sheriff's badge.

"It was lifted from an anti-Hillary Twitter user where countless images appear," Scavino said. "The sheriff's badge — which is available under Microsoft's 'shapes' fit with the theme of corrupt Hillary and that is why I selected it. As the Social Media Director for the campaign, I would never offend anyone and therefore chose to remove the image."

On Tuesday morning, Scavino said accusations that he was antisemitic from the media were "awful."

"I proudly celebrate holidays with my wife's amazing Jewish family for the past 16 years," Scavino tweeted.

In a statement on Monday, Trump called the accusations "false" and "ridiculous."

"Clinton, through her surrogates, is just trying to divert attention from the dishonest behavior of herself and her husband," Trump said.

Trump, who owns an estate in Bedford, also owns Trump National Golf Club Hudson Valley in Stormville and Trump National Westchester in Briarcliff Manor. The Trump name also adorns Trump Tower At City Center in White Plains, Trump Plaza in New Rochelle, Trump Park Residences in Yorktown and the Donald J. Trump State Park on the Westchester/Putnam border.
