Robert Langley defeated longtime incumbent Sheriff Don Smith, 50 percent to 48 percent, 11,732 votes to 11,397 votes, with 100 percent precincts reporting, according to unofficial results from the Putnam County Board of Elections

Smith, who was first elected in 2001, had touted the county's low crime rate while Langley focused on Smith's feud and subsequent lawsuit with former Putnam District Attorney Adam Levy.

Smith agreed to pay Levy $150,000 after he apologized for saying Levy publicly interfered in his investigation of Levy's personal trainer Alexander Hossu for raping a 13-year-old girl. Smith agreed to personally contribute $25,000 to settle the lawsuit, while the Putnam County Legislator voted to pay $125,000.

Last month it was revealed Smith sent letters to various government officials, including Attorney General Eric Schneidermann and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, asking them to charge Levy with illegally housing an undocumented immigrant or to take over his criminal cases.

In District 2, which covers Putnam Valley, incumbent William Gouldman defeated Anthony Williams 53 percent to 47 percent.

In Carmel, Republican Michael Barile and incumbent Republican Suzi McDonough  defeated independent Frank Lombardi and Democrat Judie Mirra 5,118 votes and 4,583 votes respectively, to 1,402 votes and 2,567 votes, respectively.

In Kent, Democratic Supervisor Maureen Fleming defeated Republican challenger Patricia Madigan 64 percent to 36 percent.

In the race for town council, Republican incumbents William Huestis and Paul Denbaum defeated Democrat Jason Makely and Democrat Stephen Papas with 2,208 votes and 1,683 votes respectively while Makely and Papas had 1,319 and 1,332 votes, respectively.

In Patterson, incumbent Republican Peter Dandreano and Republican Mary Smith defeated independent Joseph Capasso with 1,779 votes and 1,598 votes, respectively to Capasso's 561 votes.
