County Legislator Candidate Verni Enjoys Rowing For Recreation

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The Daily Voice will publish profiles on the candidates running for District 7 county legislator in the Nov. 5 election.

John Verni is a land-use attorney who lives in Mamaroneck with his wife Katrina, and children John Jr., Marielle, Paul and Charlie. He is running against Catherine Parker for county legislator of District 7.

Verni is an attorney and partner at Verco Properties LLC, a family-owned real estate company "specializing in the redevelopment of old buildings using green building techniques to become community assets"; an attorney with Kent Hazzard LLP, and formerly an ADA at the Westchester District Attorney’s Office, where he served as a prosecutor covering the Sound Shore.

Why do you want to lead District 7? I love the Sound Shore. I recently renovated the Mamaroneck train station into the Club Car restaurant and my real estate offices.

I also recently bought a historic home in the Orienta section of Mamaroneck that my wife, Karina, and I are renovating.

My brother lives in Larchmont with his family, and my parents live in the Rye P.O. area of Harrison. To put it simply, the Verni family has deep roots in our Sound Shore communities and I am committed to preserving our quality of life in this district.

What is your favorite location in District 7 to spend time with your family? There are so many great spots along our Sound Shore that it is difficult to pick one. I am fortunate that I work in the renovated train station so my day usually involves a stroll down Mamaroneck Avenue in our Friendly Village of Mamaroneck to get a coffee from Dawn at Cafe Mozart.

I think my favorite location is dinner any night with my family at one of the great restaurants in Mamaroneck and then a stroll along Mamaroneck Avenue.

When is your birthday? April 21, 1962.

What do you do for recreation? About six or seven years ago, I took up masters rowing. I was a football player in college and I thought the guys & gals on the Georgetown crew were a little crazy, but now I find myself getting up at 5:30am to go rowing on the Long Island Sound. We row down at the County's Glen Island Park.  The sunrise coming up over the Sound on the mornings I am out there takes my breath away every time. We are blessed to be surrounded by such beauty.

Where is your favorite restaurant in the area? Of course, I am partial since I helped build it, but the Club Car in the renovated train station is beautiful, historic, and I love Brian MacMenamin's food.

I also like Le Provencal, which is run by my rowing friends, Mieke and Derrick Dikkers, for a nice date with my wife. And when it comes to just hanging out with my kids, it is either the back yard seating at 360 Grill along Mamaroneck Avenue or we like to assemble at Harry's Burritos in Larchmont.
