On Tuesday, the Yorktown Police Department disposed of 212 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The unit was installed in May of 2012 and has since collected 2,834 lbs of drugs from the medicine cabinets of local residents – about 46 lbs a month.
More than 70 percent of young people abusing prescription pain relievers get them through friends or family.
The collection site is open 24-7 at the Yorktown Police Department and drugs can be left with no questions asked. Tablets, capsules, and patches can be dropped off but not liquids, needles or syringes.
