Identified as the driver killed in the 5:35 a.m. rollover accident was Aubrey N. Schmitt of Canaan, Conn., a sheriff's office spokesman said on Monday afternoon. She was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, according to the spokesman.

The fatal one-car crash occurred on Sharon Road near Maple Avenue in the Town of North East, according to sheriff's deputies who responded to a 911 call.

Upon their arrival, deputies observed Ms. Schmitt lying near the vehicle with serious injuries. She was given emergency care, however, was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2005 Nissan Altima operated by Ms. Schmitt was traveling westbound on Sharon Road when she lost control. The vehicle then left the roadway, struck an embankment and rolled over at which time Ms. Schmitt was ejected, according to the sheriff's office.

At this time, alcohol involvement is suspected, according to Capt. John Watterson, a sheriff's office spokesman, but the investigation into the crash is continuing by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit.

Ms. Schmitt was the only person in the vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Millerton Fire Department and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office.
