John E. Caputo, 47, of Wingdale in Dutchess County, is facing a first degree robbery charge, for holding up the Subway sandwich shop in the Patterson Commons Shopping Center at 3101 Route 22 at the intersection of Route 311 at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

During the robbery, Caputo pulled out a knife and and ordered a shop clerk to hand over money from the cash register. After grabbing the cash, Caputo ran from the shop and reportedly used a pickup truck that he had left parked nearby as a getaway vehicle. No one was injured in the incident, said Capt. William McNamara.

Caputo was apprehended at about 9 a.m. Thursday when a sheriff’s investigator in an unmarked car spotted him driving a pickup truck in Kent. The investigator recognized the truck and its driver as matching the descriptions of the suspect and vehicle wanted in the robbery, McNamara said.

The investigator, with assistance from the Town of Kent Police Department, pulled over Caputo’s vehicle and detained him for questioning. Following the interview, Caputo was charged with the robbery.

He is currently awaiting arraignment in court on the robbery charge. If found guilty of the charge he faces up to 25 years in prison.
