State Police in Somers conducted a "Speed Enforcement Initiative" on Interstate 684 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday as part of a crackdown on speeding in the area, according to New York State Police. Troopers issued 78 tickets, the majority for speeding, according to a press release.
Somers State Trooper Dominic DeRocha said the occasional initiatives help limit speeding and high-speed accidents on state freeways.
"The number of tickets vary per detail but we're constantly trying to keep the motorists speeding down and limit aggressive driving as much as possible so we don't have as many high-speed crashes," DeRocha said, adding that the details typically stem from an influx of high-speed crashes in an area. "We'll try to coordinate those details in those areas where we've seen an increased number of accidents."
State Police are set to conduct DWI and seat belt initiatives throughout the spring and summer, DeRocha said. They are typically unannounced and rarely occur in the same areas on multiple occasions to ensure that motorists slow down throughout the county, he said.
Accident and speeding statistics for I-684 were not immediately available.
"This highway safety initiative perpetuates the mission of the State Police to reduce deaths, injuries and property damage caused by motor vehicle accidents through vehicle and traffic enforcement," representatives with NYSP said in the NYSP press release.
