WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department leapt into action this weekend for a call that turned out to be a false alarm.
The department was summoned to the Hudson River for the report of a hot air balloon down north of Sing Sing Prison in Ossining and south of Croton Point Park at 8:21 p.m. Friday.
Croton firefighters, along with Westchester County Department of Public Safety Special Operations Division Emergency Services Unit Marine/Aviation personnel, Rockland County Sheriff’s officials and the Haverstraw Fire Department, investigated the report.
Using Croton Fire’s Marine 12 and Marine 32 crafts, along with multiple other boats and a helicopter from the other agencies, first responders checked the area and found no hot air balloon nor anyone in distress.
The reason for the report turned out to be a slew of party balloons that were in the water off of Ossining.
All units returned to service from the call about an hour later.
