Poughkeepsie Man Collected $8.5K In Unemployment While Working, Police Say

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. - A Dutchess County man is facing felony charges after allegedly claiming thousands of dollars in unemployment benefits while he was gainfully employed.

New York State Police troopers arrested 33-year-old Poughkeepsie resident Jose Merced on Tuesday, following an investigation that determined he collected $8,500 in unemployment insurance benefits from the New York State Department of Labor while he was still working.

Merced was arraigned and charged with felony counts of third-degree grand larceny and offering a false instrument for filing. He was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $500 cash bail or $1,500 bond. He is due to appear at the City of Poughkeepsie Court to answer the charges on Wednesday.
