CORTLANDT, N.Y. - Parents of a 17-year-old high school student were arrested and charged with two misdemeanors after police say they were aware their son was hosting an underage drinking party in their residence.

Bolivar Alvarez, 37, and Gladys Alvarez, 38 were charged with endangering the welfare of a child and unlawfully dealing with a child, both misdemeanors.

Police say up to 100 teens from Walter Panas, Lakeland and Hendrick Hudson high schools attended the party Saturday night at the Alvarez's home. Police were called just before 11:30 p.m., when cars began blocking traffic near the home at 201 Buttonwood Ave., Cortlandt.

As troopers arrived, several members of the party fled the scene. Police said their investigation revealed, "evidence of alcohol and marijuana," and that the Alvarez's 17-year-old son was the host. The son was charged with unlawful possession of alcohol, a violation. The Alvarez's 12-year-old daughter was home at the time of the party, police said.

The couple and their son were all issued appearance tickets for 9 a.m. Jan. 18 in Town of Cortlandt Justice Court.

GB40 calling others comments ridiculous and hysterical is the problem. Everyone including you has a right to their opinion. Deriding them for those opinions only tends to inflame people.

Gb40@optimum.net:

Just a few clarifications. Parents allowing a house party with up to 100 kids with alcohol and marijuana being served to the kids who are underage knowingly are wrong and looking for a world of trouble both legally and morally. This is illegal and the adults have a responsibility to ensure the kids safety. Having said that, my point in my previous comment still stands. In fact my point is proven my some of the ridiculous hysteria comments here. Not once in my previous comment did I condone underage drinking or the use of illegal drugs. Those who over moniter are damaging there kids future. These little man babys wont be able to made a measured decision without Mommys approval when there all grown up. Jeeze!!!

dchavarriat:

I don't believe that ANY parent should ever allow a house party with alcohol or drugs. However, I do remember being a teen and they will find the parties and get the alcohol. Teens are like aliens these days. Who honestly understands them? The parents in this case were VERY wrong, but I agree with the one person who said that kids are being babied until they are 30. Life experience played a HUGE role in the level headed, straight edge parent I am today. However, never did the parents allow such behaviors. That is dangerous ground.

Coca:

Underage drinking is a nice way of saying: breaking the law. If you don't agree with the law-then change it! Until that time, parents should teach their children to obey the law. Too many times it is the "parents" who are taking the easy way out. Hosting a "drinking" party-under the guise of keeping them safe (I.e., not having them drive drunk) is the COWARDS way of parenting. You want to be their friend? Go back in time, when you were 16 , and be their bet buds. Until that time, do what you are legally responsible for; teaching your children right from wrong.

kasey38:

Should these people be parents?

fedupinny:

Mr. Granger are you for real? They shouldn't be drinking period. And if those parents are allowing it they have a responsibility to let all of the parents of the kids who are attending know. I bet that didn't happen..as such they are aiding and abetting. I'm not oblivious to the fact that my kids could be drinking anyone but for another adult whose NOT their parent to allow it takes a lot of gall on their part...it's not for them to make that decision for me.

Gb40@optimum.net:

What a short memory us "grown ups" have. I would bet that 90% of people who drink legally were drinking illegally in the woods or at house parties before reaching legal age. Theres a small minority of people whining about other peoples behavior and policing the police to enforce these laws. Young people today cant look crooked without some helicopter mom monitoring there every move. We are raising a generation of kids that are finding it harder to discover their own identity. Remember that there are twice as many people on this planet that there was 40 years ago. It seems that most of the extra people are watching teenagers to make sure they are not having fun. Everyone needs to relax a little and trust our kids to make decisions for themselves and make mistakes so that they can learn from it. Allow them to grow up and stop treating them like babys. Kids are kids now til there 30. Jeeze!!!

kasey38:

I really hope you are not a parent!

fedupinny:

GB40 I hear you but someone else's parents shouldn't knowingly be allowing that. End of discussion.

Soren Kirkus:

>>Everyone needs to relax a little

YOU relax, bud.

If my teenage daughter was at that party -- after promoting to me, hey, it's OK, the parents will be home -- and then I learned that alcohol and marijuana were served there despite the parents' presence -- Mr. Alvarez would be in surgery right about now getting my boot removed from his ass.

michael.w.granger:

Thats a little to many people. but honestly would you rather have kids drinking in sketchy wooded areas where they are in more risk of endangering themselves, or have a CONTROLLED and MONITORED party at a house.

Carolynj:

Honestly, are people beak dead these days? Read a study or two before you 'ok' underage drinking.
