PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Janeil Myke, a 24-year-old Peekskill resident, has been arrested and charged in the murder of 22-year-old Stephen Agosto, also of Peekskill, which occurred in Peekskill Sunday night, police said.

Myke was charged with second-degree murder after allegedly shooting Agosto multiple times on the 1400 block of Park Street.

He was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Detectives began to investigate, piecing together the final hours of Agosto's life through multiple interviews and search warrants, Agosto said.

Myke was developed as a suspect on Tuesday afternoon and his residence on Rolling Way in Peekskill was under surveillance.

At 4:30 p.m., Myke was spotted leaving his residence on foot and was taken into custody after a brief police pursuit. Myke disclosed he shot Agosto during an interview with police.

He is being held without bail. Police are still investigating the motive of the shooting.

"I would first like to recognize the outstanding police work on the part of all of the police officers, detectives, and supervisors from the Peekskill Police Department who have worked on this case non-stop since its inception," Police Chief Eric Johansen said. "It is because of their commitment to justice that this case was solved so quickly and a violent criminal was removed from the streets without further incident."

Police were assisted by the FBI Violent Crime Task Force; The United States Attorney’s Office; The New York State Police; The Westchester County Department of Public Safety; The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office; The Westchester County Intelligence Center; New York State Crimestoppers; The New York City Police Department; and the Teaneck Police Department.

"This case is a classic example of the type of good police work that results from cooperation between multiple agencies and departments," Johansen said.
