According to Mayor Frank Catalina, a police officer on patrol saw smoke coming from the 14,000 square foot building at 2:30 a.m. The Peekskill Fire Department responded to the scene, where they saw a dumpster where the fire had started at the four-story brick building.

Catalina said the fire department does not believe the fire was suspicious.

"There was no forced entry or foul play," Catalina said.

No one was in the building, which was being gutted and renovated to be developed as commercial and residential units, at the time of the fire, Catalina said. The mayor said the garage was extensively damaged. Con Edison turned off the utilities and there was extensive water in the building.

Catalina praised the Peekskill Fire Department for getting the fire quickly under control. Peekskill was assisted by the Lake Mohegan and Montrose Fire Departments.

The building dates back to 1838.
