Man Clocked At 82 MPH On Taconic Convicted Of Felony DWI

A jury in Putman County convicted a 42-year-old man on Monday of felony driving while intoxicated in Putnam Valley last year, according to Putnam County District Attorney Robert V. Tendy.

Brian R. Morgan of Brooklyn, who has two prior DWI-related convictions, faces up to seven years in jail when he is sentenced on May 31, said the DA's office.

Monday's conviction is in relation to a traffic stop Sept. 3, 2016, on the Taconic State Parkway after State Trooper David Jenkins turned on his rear radar and saw Morgan drive up behind him at 82 miles per hour around 6:30 a.m., the DA's office said.

After stopping Morgan, the trooper smelled alcohol on his breath and noticed his eyes were bloodshot, the DA's office said.

Morgan was charged after he failed various field sobriety tests and refused to take a chemical breath test, the DA's office said.

“Defendants like Morgan, repeat offenders of driving while intoxicated, need to be prosecuted vigorously and held accountable for the danger they put others in. ADA Melissa Lynch put a lot of time into this prosecution and I’m very proud of the work she did,” Tendy said.

Morgan is being held at the Putnam County Jail.
