Police are reportedly investigating a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a 20-year-old Patterson pedestrian about 8:45 p.m. on Friday night, according to her mother.

The mother of a hit-and-run accident victim ran into the Patterson Deli on Route 22 on Friday night to seek help. She said a female customer rendered first aid to her 20-year-old daughter as they waited for EMTs and police to arrive.

Daily Voice was unable to get confirmation on Sunday of an investigation from the Putnam County Sheriff's Department or state police.

But the girl's mother, Migdalia Torres-Romero of Patterson, contacted Daily Voice to seek the public's help in identifying the driver of a large, dark pickup truck that she said struck her daughter along the side of Haviland Hollow Road, about 100 feet from Route 22.

"She's doing OK, thank God," Torres-Romero said of her daughter, Nefretiri Chappotin, also known to co-workers as "Dede."

Torres-Romero said that her daughter was walking on the shoulder of Haviland Hollow Road, outside the white line, while a friend was walking along the opposite shoulder of the roadway.

A pickup truck with its high beam lights on reportedly sped up as it approached Route 22. Nefretiri Chappotin tried to jump further away from the passenger side of the truck as it sped up, but it still struck her right hand.

"I saw the truck and I think he saw me," Nefretiri told her mother.

Torres-Romero, who lives near the accident scene, immediately ran outside when she learned her daughter had been struck.

"I saw (her friend) picking her up," Torres-Romero said. "They drive so fast along there, I was scared of getting hit in the back with my granddaughter."

Torres-Romero said she took Nefretiri into the Patterson Deli store to get help and a female customer administered first aid. She was taken by ambulance to Danbury Hospital for surgery.

Police are reportedly reviewing video from local business cameras to help identify the hit-and-run vehicle.

"Dede" Chappotin, who works in the kitchen at Pleasant Ridge Nursing Home, wants to be an Emergency Medical Technician someday, so told her mother she enjoyed interacting with the EMTs who treated her en route to Danbury Hospital.
