Cortlandt State Police Charge Man With Shoplifting, Drug Possession

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- A 35-year-old man has been charged with attempting to steal tools and other merchandise and drug possession after an incident at Home Depot in Mohegan Lake on Sunday, according to state police from the Cortlandt barracks.

Lee S. Berwick of Mohegan Lake has been charged with tampering with physical evidence (a Class E felony), petit larceny and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance (seventh degree), Class A misdemeanors.

Trooper were dispatched to the Home Depot located on East Main Street in Mohegan Lake for a shoplifter in custody.  Loss prevention there observed Berwick conceal approximately $72 worth of tools and other merchandise in his pants, police said. Berwick then exited the store failing to pay for the concealed items and was apprehended, according to police.

An investigation revealed that Berwick discarded drug evidence consisting of suboxone and alprazolam under the patrol vehicle to avoid additional criminal charges.

Berwick was issued appearance tickets directing him to appear before the Town of Cortlandt Court on Monday, June 22.
