YORKTOWN, NY. -- Stan Gitner, a news photographer known for being a fixture at accidents and fires, died on Saturday at the age of 85.
Gitner died at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt after a recent illness. Before becoming a news photographer, Gitner worked in motion picture film rejuvenation for more than 30 years.
Gitner was also a Yorktown Auxiliary Police Officer and in 1982 he was appointed the Deputy Director of the Town of Yorktown Office of Disaster and Emergency Services, a position he held until his death. Gitner was a member of both the Yorktown and Mahopac Ambulance Corps and the Yorktown Jewish Center.
Gitner was a photographer at North County News for 15 years and for The Examiner. First responders remembered Gitner on Facebook for having a station wagon full of antennas and always being right where the action was.
"A scene was never complete until Stan showed up," Erica Mulleady said.
"Stan was such a happy go lucky guy," Donald Izzo said. "A real pleasure to work with. Never had a problem with him on the scene."
Gitner's funeral was held on Monday and he was buried at King David Cemetery in Putnam Valley. He is survived by his wife Sonia, his sons Fred, Barry and Henry, three grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
