MONTROSE, N.Y. William Meier of Montrose died Sept. 26 of pneumonia at Hudson Valley Hospital Center. He was 87.
Born June 24, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Hans and Martha Meier. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II as a corporal in the Sixth Division. Meier served in the Pacific Theater from November 1944 to April 1946, taking part in the Battle at Okinawa from April 1 to July 2, 1945.
Meier was a communicant of the Church of the Divine Love in Montrose, where he served on the buildings and grounds committee and the church cemetery association. In his earlier years, Meier enjoyed coaching Little League and coached his sons for many years in the Cortlandt Little League.
He was predeceased by a brother, John and his first wife, Virginia. Meier is survived by his wife, Doris, of Montrose; four children, William (Cheryl) Meier Jr., of Somers, Conn., Thomas (Debbie) Meier, of Shawnee, Kan., Susan (Pete) Bell, of Buchanan, and Richard (Renee) Brown Jr., of Mohegan Lake; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cortlandt Funeral Home in Verplanck. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Divine Love. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Montrose.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Divine Love or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
