Theresa Engel, 61, Of Croton-on-Hudson

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Theresa Engel of Croton-on-Hudson died Aug. 13. She was 61.

Engel was born Dec. 19, 1951, in the Bronx, to Walter and Rose Engel. She received a Masters degree from Fordham University. She was one of the founders of Recovery Sunday for the Archdiocese of New York. She worked for ARCS (Aids Related Community Services) in Hawthorne. She spent most of her life serving the poor, homeless, addicted and mentally challenged.

Engel is survived by her sister, Sr. Elizabeth Engel O.P.; brothers, Rev. Paul Engel, O.F.M., Cap. Edward Engel, Peter Engel, Daniel Engel; several nieces and nephews; and many extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Mary Sweeney; and brother, Harold Engel.

Calling hours are Thursday, Aug. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday, aug. 16 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cortlandt Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Church of the Holy Name of Mary in Croton-on-Hudson.
