Mahopac Community Mourns Loss Of Sean Callahan, 12

MAHOPAC, N.Y. – Sean C. Callahan, 12, of Mahopac, died Saturday, Aug. 22.

Callahan died of a rare form of brain cancer, according to News 12 Westchester.

Born in Valhalla, New York, Dec. 7, 2002, he was the son of Daniel and Janine Kelly Callahan.

He attended Mahopac Middle School and was a parishioner of St. John The Evangelist Church in Mahopac. He played Mahopac Sports Association (MSA) football, CYO basketball, MSA lacrosse and was on the MSA wrestling team.

Through the "Friends of Jaclyn" organization, he was adopted by the US Army Blacknights football team at West Point and was made the MVP during a spring game, was given a Blacknights helmet with the number "18" on it, his MSA football jersey number, and given a one-day contract with the New York Yankees.

He wrote his book, called "Don't Give Up – Advice From a Ten Year Old Cancer Survivor," with the hope that it would help alleviate the fears of younger cancer patients.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother and sisters, Michael, Hope, Keira, Abigail and Kaitlyn; his maternal grandparents, Gene and Catherine Kelly; his paternal grandmother, Jean Callahan; as well as his aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral mass took place Wednesday 1 p.m. at St. John's. Private cremation followed.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Sean's Soldiers, Inc. P.O. Box 47, Jefferson Valley, NY 10535. Sean's Soldiers is a Not for Profit organization, started by Callahan, with the mission of helping children hospitalized with cancer.
