CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Joseph V. Pettit Sr., a longtime Croton-on-Hudson resident, died Aug. 24 at Phelps Memorial Hospital. He was 85.
A resident of Croton-on-Hudson since 1964, Pettit served as a volunteer firefighter and commodore of the Croton Yacht Club for two terms in 1988 and 1998. He was also a member of the Croton Caring Committee and active in the Croton Republican Party.
Pettit was born in New York City to Nora and James Pettit, Irish immigrants from County Mayo and Longford. He was married to Rita Pettit, who predeceased him. Pettit served in the Navy during World War II and retired after 25 years of service as battalion chief in the Fire Department of New York.
With the guidance and dedication of Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi, he participated in the successful preservation of the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System campus in Montrose.
Pettit is survived by five children, Dennis Pettit, of Southport, N.C., Karen King, of North Salem, Joseph Pettit Jr., of Brookfield, Conn., Rita Many, of Ossining, and Michael Pettit, of Lonetree, Colo.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his longtime companion, Audrey Gabrielson, of Croton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton. Edward F. Carter Funeral Home in Croton was in charge of arrangements.
