BUCHANAN, N.Y. - Guinevere B. Ferris of Buchanan died April 13. She was 98.
Ferris was born Jan. 17, 1916, in Montrose, to Adrian D. Bogardus and the former Naomi M. Dyckman. She attended local schools, graduating from Hendrick Hudson High School in 1933. She held several jobs, including secretary to local attorney James Dempsey and Town of Cortlandt Supervisor Grant. She became an LPN and was employed by Phelp's Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1976.
She was Grange Lector & Head of children's Grange, Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, started the first storybook hour at the Hendrick Hudson Free Library. A longtime parishioner at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Peekskill, she had been a member of the Altar Guild, lector, Sunday School teacher, lay reader, member of the choir and secretary of the Vestry. She was a lifetime member of the Buchanan Ladies Auxiliary & past secretary, as well as a life time member of the Buchanan Senior Citizen's Club, serving as president and secretary.
She holds the distinction of being the first elected woman trustee in the Village of Buchanan. She also served as a District Leader in the Town of Cortlandt, as well as working with Gov. George Pataki on Senior Citizen's issues.
In 2003, Guinevere was inducted into the Westchester County Senior Citizens Hall Of Fame for her long work and dedication. In September 2013, she was inducted as a New York State 40th Senate District Women of Distinction.
Ferris is survived by her daughters, Nancy (Paul) Heineman of Port Orange, Fla., Adrienne (Mark) Pietras of New Windsor, Guinevere "Wendy" (Douglas) McNeil of Wappingers Falls; sons, Edward (Judy) of Fredericksburg, Va., Jon (Mary) of Agawam, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Edward C.; and brother, Adrian Duryea Bogardus.
Calling hours are Thursday, April 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday, April 18 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at The Cortlandt Funeral Home in Verplanck. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19 at St. Peters Episcopal Church, Peekskill.
