Dr. Margaret Cioffi, 81, Worked At VA Hospital In Montrose

SOMERS, N.Y. - Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Cioffi, formerly of Manhattan and Somers, died Saturday, May 3. She was 81.

Dr. Cioffi was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Hoboken, N.J., to Pearl Herlihy (Macdonald) and David Herlihy. She received a primary and secondary education, and graduated from Misericordia University. She received her medical training at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Upon completing her MD, she and her husband made their home in Bologna, Italy. The Cioffis traveled widely in Europe before returning to the States and settling in New York City, where they lived for many years before moving to the Westchester town of Somers.

She practiced clinical psychiatry at Bellevue and St. Luke's/Roosevelt hospitals in Manhattan before opening a private practice with her husband in Yorktown Heights. The last decade of her professional life was spent working with veterans at the VA hospital in Montrose.

Dr. Cioffi is survived by her sister, Patricia Herlihy; brother, Joseph Herlihy; children, Vincent Cioffi, Mary Cioffi, Theresa DiDato, and Margaret Cioffi; and seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Albert; sister, Kathleen Tovo; and son-in-law, Thomas DiDato.

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, May 8 at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel at Dorsey Funeral Home, 14 Emwilton Place, Ossining. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
