Dorothy T. Thomas, 93, Retired Teacher At Lindsey Elementary In Montrose

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- Dorothy T. Thomas, of Buchanan, 93, died away on Feb. 26.

She was the daughter of Bertha and Charles W.A. Travis of Peekskill.

Thomas was a graduate of the New York State University College at New Paltz and was a highly respected teacher of reading and math at the F.G. Lindsey Elementary School in Montrose. Thomas and her husband were lovers of the seashore, where both have walked the beaches from Maine to Florida. She was an avid knitter and enjoyed her craft work.

Thomas was an active member of the Church of Divine Love in Montrose and was member of the Altar Guild for more than 50 years and also served as a vestry person.

She and her husband served for 44 years as volunteers at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center where she also served as the recording secretary for the Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Cortlandt Chapter of the DAR and a member of the Buchanan Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by her husband of more than 68 years, Frank of Buchanan;  daughter Ellen (Joe) Chindano of Verplanck and son Charles (Barbara) Thomas of Vails Gate. She is also survived by grandchildren Kevin Ryan (Amina) Thomas, Carissa Kaitlyn Thomas, Robert (Nancy) Hooley and nieces, Marilyn (Jay) Palefsky and Janice (Robert) Heyn.

She was predeceased by her sister Bertha (Travis) Bell and her brother Charles Travis.

Visiting hours from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Cortlandt Funeral Home, 97 Broadway, Verplanck, N.Y. 10596. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Episcopal Church of Divine Love, 80 Sunset Road, Montrose 10548.
