WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. Lazy summer days spent at the beach or the park are common for many Westchester County children. But easy, breezy summertime fun is not so ubiquitous for children from the inner city.
Thats where the Fresh Air Fund comes in. Based in New York City, the Fresh Air Fund helps offer summer vacations to New York City boys and girls with the help of volunteer host families. And even though July is half over, the Fresh Air Fund is looking for more families to host children ages 6 to 18.
When you volunteer to host, you offer a child a break from the intensity of summertime in the city. And Fresh Air Fund host families insist that you dont need to go farther than your own backyard.
Its really worth giving a child a new experience, said one volunteer host, according to the Fresh Air Fund. Having the ability to walk out the door and have their feet in the grass is so refreshing. She just enjoyed being in the backyard with us. We kept it very basic and enjoyed laughing together on the porch.
Established in 1877, the Fresh Air Fund has allowed more than 1.7 million low-income New York City children to experience summer vacations they would not otherwise enjoy. And, according to the group, more than 65 percent of the children are invited back by their host families for future summer vacations.
