Verplanck Fire Under Investigation

Arson investigators are looking into the cause of a fire Sunday evening that left a multi-family home uninhabitable.

Officials with the Verplanck Fire Department say the blaze at 157 7th Street broke out around 8:30 p.m. and was declared under control about an hour and a half later.

Verplanck Fire Chief Joe Curry said putting the fire out was a "smooth operation" and there were no reported injuries. All of the building's occupants were able to escape unharmed. Curry says the fire was confined largely to the second floor of the two-family house and that the damage was extensive.

A woman who bystanders said lived in the second floor of the home did not wish to speak with reporters at the scene of the fire.

The Verplanck Fire Department was assisted by fire officials from Montrose, Buchanan, Peekskill, CVAC and the Croton Fire Departments.

Officials at the scene refused to speculate on the cause of the Christmas day blaze. The Westchester County Arson Task Force is assisting in the investigation.
